Students admitted to any educational leadership program after August 1, 2004 will be required to submit an exit portfolioONE EXIT PORTFOLIO is required for students in MSU’s educational leadership program. The artifacts in the portfolio are a reflection of YOU as an educational leader. For each of your EDIL courses you will see assignments marked with a “*P*” suggesting that the work completed for that assignment be included in the portfolio. As you work your way through MSU’s educational leadership programs you should NOT develop a separate portfolio for each program. Rather, the initial portfolio is updated to include work completed in subsequent programs and the updated artifacts should show a growing knowledge and maturity in skills as an educational leader. A rubric for assessing the portfolio and a checksheet providing guidance for assembling the portfolio may be obtained from any educational leadership faculty member or by clicking the links shown below.

Important Dates

Remembering deadlines is an important part of completing a degree or certification program.  The following links provide information about some of those important dates:

bulletApplication for program completion should be completed at the beginning of the term a student expects to complete the requirements for the degree/certification.  You will note that there is an application for degree program completion and an application for nondegree program completion.  Click on the following link for more information: MSU Graduate Programs.

bulletThe Kentucky Principals Test (KPT) is offered several times during the year.  Students are STRONGLY encouraged to use the online Study Guide offered through the Education Professional Standards Board in preparation for the exam.  Click here for dates for the KPT.

bulletThe School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) is based on standards developed by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC).  This test is given 3 - 4 times a year.  Personnel from MSU's leadership program usually offer a workshop for students taking the exam.  Contact your advisor for information about the workshop.  Contact the Educational Testing Service for additional information.  Click here for dates for the SLLA.

Degree and Certification Options

Interested in developing your leadership skills and pursuing an advanced degree at the same time?  The MSU Instructional Leadership Program offers you several options from which to choose.  Students may earn a Masters in School Administration which leads to certification as a school principal (P - 12).  Students may also earn certification as a supervisor of instruction, director of pupil personnel, superintendent of schools, or the highest degree offered at Morehead State University, Educational Specialist in Instructional Leadership.

Classes are offered in a variety of settings and structures.  Some classes are 100% on-line, others Internet supported, while others are more traditional face-to-face courses.  Principal cohorts are located in various parts of the MSU service region.  The principal cohorts are designed to allow students to complete the Masters in School Administration program in approximately two years.  The cohort structure allows students to develop a collegiality with their student-colleagues.  Additionally, since the cohort groups are offered out in the service region, drive time is minimized.  Campus-based cohort groups for students interested in the superintendents certification are also available.  Beginning in January 2007, all courses required for the Masters in School Administration will be offered 100% online.

State regulations require students who are pursuing certification as a school principal to pass two tests for certification purposes.  The School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) is based on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers.  The SLLA is administered by the Educational Testing Service.  All Instructional Leadership coursework is centered around the ISLLC Standards.  The Kentucky Principals' Test (KPT) is based primarily on Kentucky laws and regulations and is administered by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.  Students preparing for the KPT are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to register for the on-line Study Guide and complete each of the quizzes that may be found there.
