Personal Information
My high school sweetheart, Sharon Grannis Barnett and I were married May 17, 1974 and we
live near Flemingsburg, KY. We have three daughters, Sarah, Michele and Melissa. Sarah is a first grade teacher at Nicholas County Elementary and is married to Dustin Hamm. Sarah and Dustin made Sharon and me grandparents on January 9, 2009. Hunter Scott Hamm is our FIRST GRANDCHILD. Michele, one of our twin daughters graduated from MSU in December 2008 and is married to Adam Hawkins. Melissa, our other twin daughter plans to graduate from MSU in May 2009. We also have a wonderful beagle named Copper and a SPOILED bichon frise named Taylor. As a family we're active members of the Elizaville Christian Church in Elizaville, KY.
My educational career started at Fleming County Middle School (renamed Simons Middle School after Joe A. Simons) where I served as a middle school math teacher. I then moved to the Central Office as Instructional Supervisor. As instructional supervisor I was given the responsibility of overseeing the instructional program K - 12. This included professional development, testing, textbooks, certified evaluations, and accreditation. In 1988 my family and I moved to Bourbon County where I became assistant superintendent for the Bourbon County Schools. In 1990 we moved back to Fleming County after I accepted the job as Fleming County Schools' superintendent. After serving for superintendent of Fleming County, in 1995 I accepted the job as assistant superintendent for the Rowan County Schools. Then, in 2000, I accepted the job as superintendent for the Bracken County Schools and worked there until January 1, 2002. My fulltime work with Morehead State University began in January 2002 after completing 27+ years working in Kentucky's public schools. As an associate professor in the Instructional Leadership Program I teach graduate students who are pursuing certification as a school principal, director of pupil personnel, supervisor of instruction, or school superintendent. Returning to the classroom has been a lot like going home. I find the feedback and interaction I receive from students energizing and exciting. I just hope I'm able to return the favor! During the 2008-09 academic year I have been serving as assistant dean for the College of Education.
