Welcome to the Morehead State University Department of Music Trumpet Studio! Private study in the applied studio is one of the most important aspects of any music degree program. The private studio is the place where students develop themselves into the best performing musician possible. In the private trumpet lesson at Morehead State University, Professor Gregory Wing uses a kinesthetic approach to teaching the trumpet. "I teach my students to concentrate on playing with a beautiful, full sound, totally focusing on the finished musical product and not the analysis that often creates added frustration to the development of the student. We spend a great deal of time focused on the student’s self-image and, through the trumpet, help the student to become the person who is groomed for success in music. My definition of success is the continuous journey toward the achievement of predetermined worthwhile goals."

The teaching and learning activities in the trumpet studio are linked to the other components of the music degree program such as ensemble performance, music theory, history, conducting, music education courses, etc. The integration of all aspects of the music curriculum, along with commitment and dedication on the part of the student, will result in a well-rounded musician that is equipped to be a more effective performer in their chosen field of study.

Members of the MSU trumpet studio are active in University ensembles as well as the MSU Trumpet Choir. This group meets two hours per week with a focus on learning the trumpet quartet and ensemble repertoire, ensemble sound quality, balance, blend, group musicianship, intonation, and style. All private studios in the MSU Department of Music have weekly one-hour master classes called "Performance Class." The activities in this class vary and include sectionals, group classes, performance of materials learned in the private lesson, and the evaluation of performances of others. With participation in the private trumpet lesson, Trumpet Choir, Performance Class, and the ensembles, the trumpet students at MSU see their trumpet professor at least three or four times per week in an educational setting and receive regular academic advising.
