10th Kentucky Ultra Trail Sojourn

The Kentucky Ultra is going on 10. As has become the tradition, there will be the pre-run buffet on Friday night before the run. The cost of the buffet will be covered by the entry donation. Guest are also invited at cost (which will be about $14 or less - pending). The location for the buffet MAY be changing this year; the Ramada Inn is in the process of being sold, and it is uncertain if the buffet will/will not be there this year. Please let us know in advance that you are coming. We are asking for a $50 entry donation per runner to defray the cost of the buffet, aid, t-shirts, and a donation to the NewHope Free Health Clinic.
There will be plenty of aid, a NEW well-marked, beautiful, course, and a good time for all. Please indicate you are coming at least two (2) weeks in advance by contacting Herb Hedgecock so that plans can be made to accomodate you. This is a fun-run, not a race. Aid will be provided; there was water and gatoraid, pb&j sandwiches, pretzels, cookies, bananas, and other things at the aid drops last year. Expect at least as much this year. You should plan on using a water bottle, so please bring one. Cups are not supplied at the aid stations. Please extend the courtesy of letting us know in advance if you will run. If the number of runners gets too large, then some major replanning may need to be made. We reserve the right to limit the entries in that case.
The weather in March is typically in the 30's at the start and may warm to the 40-50's later. Occasionally we have a rare snow storm that time of year; sometimes the temperature even hits the 60's. Be prepared.

Cave Run Lake and the city of Morehead are an easy drive from several places: one hour east of Lexington, KY or west of Huntington, WV; two hours from Louisville, Cincinnati, or Charleston WV; three-plus hours from Columbus or Knoxville, about 250 miles from Indianapolis, and 426 miles from Chicago. Morehead is just off Interstate-64 at Exit 137. You can contact the Morehead U S Forest Service Office for more details and maps of the Cave Run area. Also, contact the Morehead Chamber of Commerce for maps and brochures on area sites.
Directions to the Start: Traveling From The East or West
Take I-64 to exit 133 (Farmers/Sharkey). Go South on Hwy 801 for about three
miles (follow the signs toward Cave Run Lake). You will come to a stop light
at US 60. Cross 60 and continue south on 801 for almost two (2) miles to
Hwy 826. Turn right on 826, crossing the dam, and travel about 1.1 miles.
Turn right at the bottom of the hill into the Tailwater Recreation area.
This is about a 20-minute drive from the Ramada Inn.
From the I-64 exit 137, turn south on Hwy 11 going towards Morehead. You will drive about 2.5 miles into town. At the traffic light by the pedestrian bridge (between the middle school and the hospital), turn LEFT onto 2nd Street. Go through two stop signs. After passing the second stop, turn LEFT at the next street (Tippett). Drive one block and turn RIGHT on 3rd street. There are two parking lots. The one to the right is directly behind Lappin Hall, where the buffet will be held from 5:00-8:30. The entrance is on the side of Lappin. Please note that seating is limited, so everyone cannot eat and sit around socializing. After you have eaten, then let others have your spot. There are plenty of inexpensive hotel rooms within 20-30 minutes driving
time. There are about six different motels at Morehead (exit 137). Since
the University will be on spring break, then there should be no problem getting
a room.
