What Did the Planned Parenthood Sting Really Accomplish?
This article is about the actions Live Action took against Planned Parenthood. Live Action, an anti-abortion group, sent out men posing as sex traffickers to 12 Planned Parenthood clinics in six states. These meetings were secretly videotaped and one of these videotapes was released to the public. This video depicts a Planned Parenthood manager advising one of the men on how to obtain abortions for their underage prostitutes at another clinic that is more lax than they are and even jokes with the man about keeping his girls working right after they have their abortions.
This Planned Parenthood clinic actually reported the incident to the central office who then informed the FBI of the potential prostitution ring, but when the video was released this manager lost her job because of the way she handled to meeting. Live Action’s president is quoted saying that the video shows that Planned Parenthood intentionally breaks laws and covers up the abuse of young girls. However, the videos looked like they had been edited, so the creditability of the video was severely reduced.
Planned Parenthood actually suspected that these sex traffickers were posing for an anti-abortion cause. A similar set of undercover videos was made in 2009. Spokesperson Stuart Schear was quoted saying that making false claims of sex trafficking to advance a political agenda is extremely cynical.
These types of videos prevent workers at places like Planned Parenthood from giving care to patients that are in need as well as waste government money on unnecessary investigations.
I think what Live Action did was pointless and very unethical. I also don’t think that what they did helped their cause for anti-abortion in any way. Places like Planned Parenthood are not just abortion referral sites. They are clinics where soon to be mothers can go for prenatal care and counseling, be it abortion or care of a child, when they can’t afford to go anywhere else. The videos were also edited in such a way that the truth was not completely told. I do think what the manager of the clinic from the video was wrong and very unprofessional. She rightly lost her job for what she did.
